ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of in-situ investigations on the performance of drum shearer-loaders employed in the Middle Anatolian Lignite (OAL) Mine, operated by Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI). The current drum shearer-loaders in the world were observed to suffer serious drawbacks related to high pick consumption, high cutting vibration and low drum life span, all arising from poor pick lacing arrangement. A series of comprehensive long-term in-situ trials were carried out in an attempt to minimize or eliminate these drawbacks in the OAL Mine. The original pick lacing arrangement of the drums employed in the OAL Mine was abandoned and a new pick lacing arrangement was adopted. These new drums were then compared to original drums during the routine underground production operations in identical cutting conditions. Comparison was achieved on the basis of the production performance of the machine, cutting efficiency parameters such as power consumption, specific energy, particle size distribution of the excavated product, respirable dust generation and cutting vibration. The results revealed that, with the new drums, performance of the drum shearer-loader was remarkably increased, indicating the significance of proper pick lacing parameters in practice.
