ABSTRACT

World’s leading manufacturers of mechanical excavators and cutting heads (drums) are known to use computer programs to analyse cutting efficiency and cutting vibrations. Nevertheless, details of these programs have not been disclosed through any documentation due to commercial secreacy. This paper describes new computer programs developed by the author to analyse cutting efficiency and cutting vibrations in drum shearer-loaders. The computer programs were developed by using AutoLISP and Quick BASIC programming languages, respectively. These computer programs allow the user to analyse the vibration parameters such as horizontal, vertical, axial reaction forces and torque along with the relative duties of picks on the drum during the cutting operation. In the extent of this study, cutting efficiency parameters and vibrations of drum shearer-loaders employed in Middle Anatolian Lignite (OAL) Mine, operated by Turkish Coal Enterprises (TKI), were monitored during actual production operations and it was realised that, there was a good agreement between the results of in-situ measurements and the calculated values by means of computer programs. Therefore, further computer analysis was carried out for two drums with different pick lacing arrangements, each were produced by Anderson Strathclyde (now known as Long Airdox) and Eickhoff, respectively.

Key Words: Computer aided shearer drum design, cutting vibrations, cutting efficiency, drum shearer-loaders
